A top World Bank official praised the Brazilian government for its efforts to combine social programs with sustainable development and environmental policies, reports Dow Jones. Brazil's efforts to fight poverty under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva included programs that promote social inclusion helping the poor become active participants of society and encourage sustainable development, the bank's managing director Mamphela Ramphele said at a press conference last week. During a five-day visit to Brazil, Ramphele examined two anti-poverty projects in the northeastern state of Bahia that Lula wants to present as case studies at the World Bank's "Reducing Poverty and Sustaining Growth" conference in Shanghai, China, in May. The projects, which also aim for agrarian reform, could serve as examples for the rest of Brazil and other countries, Ramphele said.
